              APTLD Kuala Lumpur Meeting in July

APTLD convened its second Member and Board Meeting for the year of 2004 at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on 18 July. The meeting began with a special session of fruitful dialogue with CENTR on how both regional organizations, APTLD and CENTR, might enhance future cooperation and learning from each other¡¦s operation experiences. ICANN Vice President, Mr. Paul Verhoef, and IANA General Manager, Mr. Doug Barton, were also invited to the meeting for members to have the opportunity of communicating face to face on subjects such as ICANN budget, accountability and framework, and IANA process.               Resolutions Adopted at Kuala Lumpur ICANN Board Meeting

The second round of ICANN meetings in 2004 was held 19-23 July in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The ICANN Board has Adopted several important resolutions including ICANN Budget for Fiscal Year 2004-2005; Board Committee Assignments; Registry/Registrar Request for Extension to Implement of Extensible Provisioning Protocol; WIPO II President's Working Group Recommendation; SSAC Report on Redirection in the COM and NET Domains; World Summit on the Information Society; Internationalized Domain Names; Designation of Cape Town as the 2004 Annual Meeting; Congratulations on the Inaugural Meeting of the ccNSO Council; Acknowledgement of AfriNIC Application.               First ICANN ccNSO meeting in Kuala Lumpur on 19~20 July, 2004

Since the formation of the Country-Code Names Supporting Organization (ccNSO) during ICANN Rome Meetings on 1 March 2004, the first member and Council meeting was held in Kuala Lumpur, discussing on several topics regarding it future development. (more)

ICANN and ITU jointly hosted a workshop on ccTLDs, in Kuala Lumpur on 24 July, 2004. (more)

 

              ICANN IDN Workshop in Kuala Lumpur on 21 July 2004

ICANN IDN workshop was held on 21 July 2004 during the ICANN meetings in Kuala Lumpur. The full-day workshop began with a tutorial session, followed by presentations focusing on knowledge-sharing and studies from particular geographical regions. (more)

 

              ICANN WSIS Workshop in Kuala Lumpur on 20 July 2004

ICANN Workshop on the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) was held during ICANN KL Meetings, focusing on the issues of ¡§Relevance to ICANN and Next Steps". (more)

 

ICANN Nominating Committee Extends Deadline for Submissions

In response to community feedback, ICANN¡¦s Nominating Committee (NomCom) announced today it has extended its deadline for Statements of Interest to 25 August 2004 (12:00 GMT). (more)

 

ICANN Launches New Initiatives to Steward a Stable Global Internet

ICANN wrapped up its week-long meetings in KL during which the world-wide Internet community moved forward on a number of significant new initiatives directed at further stewarding a stable global Internet. The meeting was attended by more than 700 participants from over 50 countries from all regions of the world. (more)

 

Next-generation IPv6 Address Added to the Internet's Root DNS Zone

On 20th July, ICANN announced that for the first time, an IPv6 nameserver address has been added to the Internet's root DNS zone. The IPv6 AAAA records for the Japan (.jp) and Korea (.kr) country code Top Level Domain (ccTLD) nameservers became visible in the root zone file. It is expected that the IPv6 records for France (.fr) will be added shortly. (more)

For responding to the transition to IPv6, on 7th June IANA has published IANA Administrative Procedure for Root Zone Name Server Delegation and Glue Data and called for comment. (more)

A Report from the ICANN SSAC on Redirection in the COM and NET Domains

This report by the ICANN SSAC describes VeriSign¡¦s actions of September-October 2003 and the technical community¡¦s responses to those actions and then analyzes the sequence of actions and reactions from the perspective of security and stability of the Internet. The Committee then presents its findings and recommendations. (more)

 

Draft Procedure for Designating Subsequent .net Registry Operator

For the designation of a subsequent registry operator for .net, a draft procedure is being outlined and announced in accordance with Section 5.2 of the current .net Registry Agreement and is being posted on the ICANN website for public comments. All substantive public comments will be provided to the ICANN Board prior to its meeting in June 2004 as a supplement to this document, after which the final procedure will be posted on the ICANN website. APEET, Asia Pacific ENUM Engineering Team, Launched

In response to the growing interest in ENUM in Asia Pacific region as well as in other regions of the world, APEET, Asia Pacific ENUM Engineering Team, was inaugurated on 19 July 2004 to help promote techinical information exchange and trial of international connection through ENUM technology. The founding members of the APEET are JPRS, CNNIC, KRNIC, SGNIC and TWNIC. (more)

TPP Internet Renewal Advice Emails Breached Code of Practice

auDA has found that accredited registrar TPP Internet acted in breach of the .au Domain Name Suppliers' Code of Practice by sending inaccurate and misleading renewal advice emails to domain name registrants. (more)

Review of auDA policy - Restriction on Geographic Names in com.au and net.au

Under current auDA policy, people are not allowed to use Australian geographic (place) names as domain names in com.au and net.au. This policy was originally introduced in 1997-98 by the previous administrators of com.au (Melbourne IT) and net.au (Connect Internet) in order to protect geographic names from commercial exploitation on the Internet. (more)

auDA Reduces Its Fee for .au Domain Names

Effective from 1 August 2004, auDA, the administrator of .au domain names, will reduce the fee it charges for .au domain names from $10.00 to $7.50 ¡V a 25% reduction and a saving of $2.50. (more)

"14th Statistical Survey Report on the Internet Development in China"

CNNIC published the "14th Statistical Survey Report on the Internet Development in China" in Beijing. According to the report, many macro data kept rapid increase. By Jun. 30, 2004, the total number of Internet users in China has reached 87.0 million, which increases by 27.9% over a 12 month period. In the mean time, the number of computer hosts in China has raised to 36.30 million. The bandwidth of international connection has reached 53.9 G, which is an increase by 190.3% over the same time of last year. Also, there have been 382216 CN domain names. In this report, surveys on the issues like the online chatting services and the online recruitment services have been conducted for the first time. (more)

China masters IPv6 domain name stem server technology for next Generation Internet

The "study based on IPv6 domain name stem server technology", an important subject for knowledge innovation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, undertaken by the CNNIC has passed the approval and acceptance of the experts team the other day. The result has indicated that China has already mastered the key technology for setting up, operating, maintaining and guaranteeing the domain name stem server for the next generation Internet. This has made China possible to provide a strong technological support to the large-scale disposition of the IPv6 network in providing the basic name service. (more)

JP Domain Name Starts the World's First Full Support for IPv6 as TLD - A Landscape Advance in IPv6 Addressing Environment in Japan ¡V

JPRS announced that IPv6 addresses of .jp domain name servers (JP DNS servers) were registered in IANA root servers and became accessible with IPv6. This makes .jp domain, aligning with .kr (Korea), the world's first Top Level Domain fully supports for IPv6 technology. Also it expands the environment where .jp domain devices with IPv6 addresses are accessible with IPv6 setting - a great stride forward in its development of the Internet community in Japan. Swedish National Post and Telecom Authority Report

In the Appropriation Directions for the 2004 Fiscal Year, the Swedish government instructed the National Post and Telecom Authority (PTS) to examine, in close cooperation with Internet operators and other stakeholders, which functions relating to the operation and administration of top level domains are crucial to a high level of security in the domain name system. In recent years, the PTS has examined a number of issues concerning the safety, accessibility and availability of the Internet, and this report builds upon that earlier work.

The report prepared by the National Post and Telecom Authority of Sweden was translated from the original Swedish into English and printed for distribution at the July 19 ¡V 23 meetings of ICANN in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, by .NU Domain Ltd as a public service. (more)
