1. What’s New (01/02/2004 – 31/03/2004)

 

APTLD Annual General Meeting at Kuala Lumpur

On 26th February, APTLD held it Annual General Meeting at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in conjunction with APRICOT 2004. Chaired by Peter Dengate Thrush, Kuala Lumpur AGM started with IANA General Manager Doug Barton’s presentation on IANA’s pipeline in 2004. His new management team, new strategic plan and modified workflow system were introduced to APTLD members. Doug’s presentation is available at http://www.aptld.org/file/IANA_APTLD_AGM.ppt.

After morning break, the AGM approved several housekeeping matters including the Elections of  2004 Board members and officers, 2003 annual report and financial report and 2004 action plan and budget. ICANN related issues were also discussed before ICANN Rome Meetings in early March. (more)

 

APTLD 2nd Technical Workshop, A Joint Effort by APTLD and APNIC

After Wellington, APTLD’s 2nd Technical Workshop, which was included in the APNIC Open Tutorial Session, was held on 24th February at Kuala Lumpur. It was initiated and organised by Yumi Ohashi, APTLD Membership Committee Chair, and John H'ng, APNIC’s Training Manager. Three speakers were invited to do the presentations on DNS-related issues. APTLD Board for 2004

Before APTLD Kuala Lumpur AGM, five member representatives were elected as APTLD Board Members. Newly elected Board Members met after AGM to decide office bearers and two associate membership applications. Members have voted in favour of Peter Dengate Thrush as Board Chair unanimously and Shariya Haniz Zulkifli as Senior Vice Chairman. Both Yumi Ohashi and Chan-ki Park carried on their current positions as Vice Chair for Membership and Vice Chair for Treasure. (more)

 

ICANN Rome Meetings

The first round of ICANN meetings in 2004 was held on 2-6 March in Rome, Italy. Several meetings were held and wrapped up some key issues to Public Forum and ICANN Board Meeting. ccTLD held a two days meeting on 1st-2nd. Representatives of 46 ccTLDs (87 attendees) met in Rome to discuss GAC Principles, WHOIS, IANA function and future ccTLD meetings. ccNSO was officially formed and had its first member meeting during ICANN Meetings to discuss the election process for the first ccNSO Council.

 

ICANN Proposed Corrections to Bylaws

During the ccNSO Launching Group's work, and discussions with ccTLD managers, ambiguities causing confusion in the ccNSO Bylaws were brought to the Launching Group's attention. The ccNSO Launching Group has conveyed these ambiguities to staff, and requested that language changes be made for clarification purposes. (more)

 

Ten New Sponsored TLD Applications Received

ICANN announced that it has received ten applications for new sponsored top-level domains (sTLD's). (more)

 

VeriSign Sues ICANN to Restore Site Finder

The suit, filed in the central district of California, claims that the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has transformed itself over the last six years from a modest technical coordinating body into the "de facto regulator of the domain name system." The lawsuit, which alleges breach of contract and antitrust violations, was filed just three days before the beginning of ICANN's meeting in Rome next week. (more)

 

APRICOT 2004 at Kuala Lumpur

Following the successful hosting of the APRICOT in 2001, Kuala Lumpur once again hosted this event for a second time. From 18 to 27 February 2004, APRICOT’s program included 5-days workshop, 2-days tutorial and 2-days conference. About 700 registered participated in this event. Other AP meetings were also held during APRICOT 2004, such as APNIC, AP* Retreat, APTLD, APSIRC, APIA, APNG, etc. APRICOT 2005 will be held at Kyoto, Japan and 2006 at Bangalore, India. (more)

JPRS today announced that it executed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Korea Network Information Center (KRNIC) for cooperation on technological development of ENUM DNS. Based on this MoU, JPRS and KRNIC start cooperation on development of ENUM DNS related technologies, trial on international ENUM DNS connection, and dissemination of technologies in Asia-Pacific region. Japan Registry Service Co., Ltd., (JPRS) ,the company responsible for management and administration of .JP top-level domain and overall management and operation of the JP domain name system (JP DNS) and Internet Initiative Japan Inc. (IIJ, NASDAQ: IIJIE), one of Japans leading total network service solutions providers today announced the introduction of IP Anycast technology to the 'a.dns.jp' operated by JPRS and the 'd.dns.jp' operated by IIJ, among all JP DNS servers (a.dns.jp - f.dns.jp) operated by 6 organizations. The introduction of the new technology aims to improve the reliability of the JP DNS. IP Anycast technology(*) enables the distribution of multiple DNS servers with the same name to various sites and provides a better quality of service, better load handling, and improved fault tolerance. Second Half Year 2003 Survey on Internet Use (Number of Internet Users Is About to Surpass 30 million)

As of December 2003, the number of people over the age of 6 who access the Internet more than once a month on average is 29.22 million. It will not take long before we see the figure exceed 30 million. That means 65.5% of the total population are using the Internet, up 6.1 percentage point (2.95 million in number) from the end of the previous year. (more)

InternetNZ Launches Stopspam Website

InternetNZ continues the war on spam. Announcing the launch of the stopspam website www.stopspam.net.nz , the leader of the InternetNZ stopspam Taskforce, David Harris states “While the stopspam website will not prevent spam, it is a resource for anyone who wants to find out what can be done to reduce the volume of spam they receive” Mr.Harris continues “We are providing a rallying point for anti spam action in New Zealand”. David Harris, who is best known as author of the globally successful email product Pegasus Mail, has developed the website as part of his contribution to the InternetNZ stopspam Taskforce. (more)

Domain Name Registration and Intellectual Property in Vietnam

Registration of domain names under the country code top level domain dot.VN in Vietnam has increased significantly since the new regulation on the management and use of Internet in Vietnam (Decision No. 92/2003/QD-BBCVT) was issued by the Ministry of Post and Telematics of Vietnam last May 2003. In an attempt to help boosting e-commerce in Vietnam, the new regulation provides simple procedures for registration of domain names and the internet authority (which is the Vietnam Internet Center ("VNNIC") under the Ministry of Post and Telematics) would act very fast in processing applications.
