Progress of APTLD Secretariat Appointment 2005~2006

APTLD has extended the Secretariat Appointment timetable by two weeks. The proposal clarification period is rescheduled until Friday, 1 October 2004. (more)

 

APTLD Attend APNIC Nadi Meeting to Recruit New Member

APTLD Chair Peter Dengate Thrush and Secretariat Ian Chiang were invited to APNIC 18th Meeting in Nadi, Fiji and did presentation on Internet Governance and APTLD Introduction in the session – “APTLD Toturials”, which was first created by APNIC. APNIC Meeting Attendees from Indonesia, New Zealand, Nauru, Singapore, and Taiwan joined this session. APTLD plans to work with other global/national organisation for outreaching. (more)

GNSO Finalized Criteria Recommendation for Designation of Subsequent .net Registry Operator
The GNSO has finalized its recommendation to ICANN regarding the criteria to be applied in the selection of a subsequent registry operator for .net. The final report was approved by the GNSO Council at their teleconference on 5 August 2004, as a consensus statement by more than a two-thirds majority vote. (more)

 

VeriSign Implements Rapid Updates to Domain Name System Files

VeriSign, Inc., the leading provider of intelligent infrastructure services for the Internet and telecommunications networks, today announced that it has implemented a major enhancement, called “rapid updates,” to its .com and .net Domain Name System (DNS) servers. With rapid updates, it is now possible for domain registrants to launch Web sites more quickly and to experience greater continuity in service when changing hosting providers or modifying their domain name registrations. This document describes the policy governing the allocation of IPv4 address space from the IANA to the Regional Internet Registries (RIRs). This document does not stipulate performance

New Instance of RIPE NCC Operated K-root Server Deployed in Milan, Italy
The RIPE NCC in partnership with the Milan Internet eXchange (MIX) S.r.L. has reached an agreement for the hosting of a new mirror instance of the K-root Internet root name server in Milan. (more)

 

Joint Evaluation of Requests by The RIPE NCC and AfriNIC
The RIPE NCC has been working very closely with AfriNIC (The African Network Information Center) to prepare for their emergence as a new Regional Internet Registry. As part of this transition process, the RIPE NCC and AfriNIC will conduct joint review of all IP and AS Number requests coming from the emerging AfriNIC region. (more)

18th APNIC Open Policy Meeting

The 18th APNIC Open Policy Meeting (APNIC 18) was held successfully in Nadi, Fiji, from 31 August - 3 September 2004. The meeting was hosted by Telecom Fiji and Connect Fiji, and was the first time that an APNIC meeting has been held in a Pacific island economy. (more)

Internet Governance

 

Internet Governance: The State of Play

The Global Forum on Internet Governance held by the UNICT Task Force in New York on 25-26 March concluded that Internet governance issues were many and complex. The Secretary-General’s Working Group on Internet Governance will have to map out and navigate this complex terrain as it makes recommendations to the World Summit on an Information Society in 2005. To assist in this process, the Forum recommended, in the words of the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations at the closing session, that a matrix be developed “of all issues of Internet governance addressed by multilateral institutions, including gaps and concerns, to assist the Secretary-General in moving forward the agenda on these issues.” (more)

Consultations on the establishment of the Working Group on Internet Governance (WGIG). Contributions have been received from the governments of Norway and USA with other contributions from the Internet Governance Project, WSIS Youth Caucus, William J. Drake and Wolfgang Kleinwachter. (more)

auDA Panel Releases Draft Recommendations on Domain Name Policy Rules

In July 2004 the auDA Board established the Name Policy Review Panel to:

review auDA's Domain Name Eligibility and Allocation Rules for the Open 2LD s (2002-07); and

provide recommendations to the auDA Board about what changes (if any) should be made to that policy. (more)

KR domain that represents Korea in the cyber space has taken the first step to utilize IPv6, the next generation version of internet address resource. Though some countries have so far tested IPv6 foroperation, Korea becomes the first country across the world to utilize IPv6. (more)

As public organizations have recently developed and provided information via wireless intenet, the use of WINC (Wireless Internet Numbers for Contents) is also on the rise. WINC allows cellular phone users to use desired contents simply by inserting numbers and pressing the internet access button on their cellular phones, without going through a long URL or complicated menus. Singapore Introduces Second-Level Domain Name

The Singapore Network Information Centre (SGNIC) will be launching second level domain names (SLDs) come 3 January 2005. Until now, Singapore has only allowed registration of third level domain names (TLDs) such as {name.com,sg]. SLDs are shorter domain names eg [name.sg] and its introduction will give the public more choices and avenues to register [.sg] domain names. The move mirrors that of Hong Kong, the United States of America, China and Japan, which saw strong uptake for SLDs following their introductions earlier on. (more)

Implementation of Second Level ‘.SG’ Domain Names
On 16 August 2004, SGNIC announced the launch of second-level level domain name under ‘.sg’ name space. The launch will be in two phases: Soft Launch from 15 Sep 04 to 2 Jan 05 and the General Launch from 3 Jan 05 onwards. The registrations of second-level domain names during the Soft Launch are subject to the 'Guidelines for Application of Second-Level Domain Names under the Top-Level Domain of '.sg' During Soft Launch Period (SLG)' which prescribe, among others, the priority registration scheme for certain applicants, the processing mode of applications as well as the allocation method for multiple application from the same priority group of applicants for the same domain name. Featuring the recent IPv6 industrialization progress around the world and particularly, the status in Taiwan, IPv6 Summit in Taiwan 2004 took place on 26-27 August in Taipei, Taiwan. “It is the first IPv6 Summit in Taiwan, which is fully supported by the global IPv6 Community”, said Dr. Shian-Shyong Tseng, Principal Investigator of the National IPv6 Deployment and Development Program in the open address. “Many key men in global IPv6 development come to Taiwan and share their great experiences with us.” As the No.1 end-user communication product supplier with production value of 6.618 billion US dollars (NTD218.4 billion) in 2003, Taiwanese manufacturers are empowered and ready to support the next generation Internet. 12th CDNC Meeting in Taipei

The 12th CDNC Meeting was held on 10-11 August 2004 in Taipei, Taiwan. About 30 delegates from TWNIC, CNNIC, HKIRC, MONIC and SGNIC have attended this meeting, and discussed on several current issues including IDN promotion, development of CDNC CDN Guideline, implementation/evaluation of new CDNC variant table, ENUM, and IPv4/IPv6 cross trial.
